Sony Venice

Supported Models

  • Sony Venice 1
  • Sony Venice 2

Protocols and Controls

There are two protocols:

  • Sony Venice Serial: the typical Sony Venice multicam workflow
  • Sony Venice IP: if you're working in S-Log and don't want/need camera control through the RCP paint mode
ControlVenice IPVenice Serial
Exposure (Iris, Gain, Shutter *1, ND filter *2)✓ *3✓ *4

  1. Shutter can be displayed/controlled as angle or speed. ECS is also available.
  2. ND is presets only.
  3. Venice IP: gain is expressed in ISO and only affects the SDI output. Base ISO (800 or 3200) affects the ISO range and the (fixed) REC ISO.
  4. Venice Serial: gain is expressed in dB, in 3 dB steps.
  5. Color temperature, tint and AWB.
  6. R/B and color temperature are available in Venice Serial, but not tint (only the color temperature is affected).
  7. Detail can be changed and toggled on/off. Matrix and Multi Matrix can be changed and toggled.
  8. Base ISO only in Venice IP.
  9. To replay, switch to Clips under Camera > User Keys > Custom. Then under Record > Replay, you can replay your last clip.
  10. User keys are accessible on the RCP under Camera > User Keys, in User Keys and Custom. You can only call them; they must be assigned on the camera body under Project > Assignable Button.
  11. Venice Serial: RED tally only, and only when not recording (the REC status is used to display the tally).
  12. Venice IP: zoom/focus are controlled in speed (position is display only).

Wiring

The camera can be controlled in two modes:

  • Sony Venice IP: the camera is controlled over IP (works best for S-Log-based workflows; RCP/paint mode is disabled).
  • Sony Venice Serial: the camera is controlled over the remote (8-pin) port, using the camera's RCP paint mode.

Locally (LAN), you can control the camera with just the RCP for IP, or by adding a CI0 for serial. Wirelessly (4G, RF, Wi-Fi), you can control it using a RIO for both IP and serial (Steadicam, robotics, etc.).

Sony Venice IP (LAN)

Venice IP over LAN

  • The RCP is powered by PoE or a 12V PSU.
  • The RCP talks directly to the camera over IP.
note

This can work through a simple Ethernet switch or a fiber system such as the Ereca CAM Racer.

Sony Venice Serial (LAN)

Venice Serial over LAN

  • The RCP is powered by PoE or a 12V PSU.
  • The CI0 or RIO is powered by the camera through the cable (no D-TAP required).
  • Cable: CY-CBL-SONY-8P-03 (controls the camera and powers the CI0/RIO; see the Cable Catalog)
note

This can work through a simple Ethernet switch or a fiber system such as the Ereca CAM Racer.

  • Some people prefer to keep the CI0/RIO on the camera side, so there is simply Ethernet between the RCP and the CI0/RIO.
  • Others prefer to keep the CI0/RIO on the RCP side and carry the serial signal over the Ereca (pro: a clean setup on the camera side; con: you lose the flexibility of the RIO for external motors, lens control, etc.).

Sony Venice IP (Wireless)

Venice IP wireless

  • The RCP is powered by PoE or a 12V PSU and connected to the internet.
  • The RIO is powered by D-TAP.
  • The RIO is connected to the camera over Ethernet.
  • The RCP talks to the RIO over the internet (using 4G, RF, Wi-Fi, etc.).
note

Video must be transmitted separately over RF; Cyanview only handles the telemetry.

Sony Venice Serial (Wireless)

Venice Serial wireless

  • The RCP is powered by PoE or a 12V PSU and connected to the internet.
  • The RIO is powered by D-TAP.
  • The RIO is connected to the camera with a CY-CBL-SONY-8P-03 cable.
  • The RCP talks to the RIO over the internet (using 4G, RF, Wi-Fi, etc.).
note

Video must be transmitted separately over RF; Cyanview only handles the telemetry.

Camera Setup

Venice IP

  1. Set the IP address and mask under Technical > Network > Setting:
    • Set Setting to LAN
    • In the LAN submenu:
      • Set DHCP to Off
      • Set IP Address to the desired camera IP (e.g. 10.192.10.100)
      • Set Subnet Mask to the desired subnet (e.g. 255.255.0.0)
  2. Set the username and password under Technical > Authentication
  3. Under Technical > Special Configuration, set RM / RCP Paint Con to Off

Venice Serial

  • Under Technical > Special Configuration, set RM / RCP Paint Con to On

RCP Setup

Add a new camera in the RCP configuration UI.

  1. Enter a custom number, name, etc.
  2. Select brand: Sony
  3. Select protocol: Sony Venice(IP)
  4. Enter the camera's IP address
  5. Enter the camera's login/password

RCP Operation

Overview

RCP main screen

The exposure knob and joystick give access to iris, ISO and shutter.

Assignable Keys

You can customize the 10 buttons at the top of the RCP main screen under MENU > SYSTEM > ASSIGN. > Set Buttons. By default, keys 1-5 are not assigned (NA). You can assign them to something more useful, for example:

This gives you quick access to:

  • The Lock button becomes a shortcut to the REC menus (replay, etc.), and its LED reflects the REC status.

Encoders

You can customize the 4 encoders below the RCP main screen under MENU > SYSTEM > ASSIGN. > Encoders. By default, they are assigned to gamma, saturation, detail and ND.

Default encoder assignment

This looks like this on the main screen:

For cine-style cameras like the Venice, it is better to assign them to color temperature, tint and ND.
