What is CyanCamera?
CyanCamera is a Cyanview app that turns an iPhone / iPad or an Android phone or tablet into a numbered camera for live production.
The phone appears on the Cyanview gateway as a camera like any other, and can be shaded (exposure and color adjusted) from the same RCP your team already uses on every other camera. RCP operation is the same as for the 210+ supported camera models, so there is almost nothing new for the operator to learn.
:::tip Terminology
- REMI and RCP: The official manual describes them as "same remote-control system, two names." REMI is the protocol/connection used by the gateway, and RCP is the control panel the operator uses.
- Gateway: The term used on the official page for what the phone camera connects to in the Cyanview system. In practice, it appears to refer to having the phone, the RCP, and the configuration computer connected to the same network. :::
What it can do
Capture
- Record in HEVC (8-bit / 10-bit), ProRes 422 Proxy to HQ, and Apple ProRes RAW on supported iPhones
- Color spaces: Rec.709, P3 D65, Rec.2020 HLG, Apple Log, Apple Log 2 (Log and HLG at 10 bits end to end)
- Frame rates: 23.98 to 60 fps in 1080p and 4K, plus 120 and 240 fps
- Bit rate: automatic or fixed up to 240 Mbps, recorded to the photo library, an SSD, or any Files folder
- Stills, stabilization modes, frame guides, shutter angle display, and a thermal monitor that sheds load before iOS throttles
Control from the RCP
- ISO, shutter, iris, exposure compensation, white balance, focus, and zoom from the RCP over REMI
- Custom buttons switch lenses, toggle the look, flip the camera, start recording, switch between RTP and SRT, nudge the bit rate, and toggle HDMI
- Red, green, and call tally light a border around the picture; the RCP sees battery, thermal state, HDMI, codec, and free space
- Auto exposure can be limited to an operator-set ISO and shutter window
- REMI Cloud connects the phone to an RCP over the internet (regional servers and a latency probe)
- Also supports VISCA over IP, Blackmagic zoom and focus demand over USB MIDI, and a REST settings API for scripted setup
On-device color shading
- Lift, gamma, gain, saturation, hue, and local contrast, adjusted live from the panel
- 16-vector multimatrix
- Bakes into a 3D LUT applied per output: preview, HDMI, recording, or stream
- Lockable so operators can't switch it off
Streaming
- RTP: For the local network, with a latency of a few frames
- SRT: Over the public internet, encrypted, in caller or listener mode, with AAC audio
- H.264 or H.265, with the bit rate changed live from the phone or the RCP
- 1080p240 to FXVP for slow motion and instant replay
HDMI output
- Rec.709, HLG, or Apple Log 2 at up to 10 bits through a USB-C adapter
- Audio monitoring and anamorphic de-squeeze on the monitor
Monitoring
- RGB parade, RGB histogram, vectorscope, and audio meter (all processed on the GPU, no external hardware needed)
LUT import
- Load any
.cubefile as the base look (made in CyanView Studio or any grading suite) - Apple Log to Rec.709 conversion LUTs ship with the app
Sync (genlock and timecode)
- Genlock and LTC on BNC through the Blackmagic Camera ProDock (the official page lists iPhone 17 Pro or later for genlock, and any ProDock model for timecode)
- Recordings carry a timecode track with offset trim. Timecode can also come from MIDI timecode over the network or from NTP
- Without genlock, a PoE dongle adds wired networking
Use cases
- Extra angles a full-size camera cannot reach
- Remote contributors on location, shaded from the truck
- Second unit and behind-the-scenes coverage that cuts cleanly against the main cameras
- Growing a multi-camera setup at low cost without adding another rack
Platforms and requirements
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| iOS (iPhone / iPad) | App Store |
| Android (phones / tablets) | Google Play |
| Remote control and shading | Requires a Cyanview RCP (everything else runs standalone) |
| Genlock and LTC | Requires a Blackmagic Camera ProDock |
| Apple Log 2 | Requires iOS 26 |
| Broadcast HDMI output and iris control | Requires iOS 27 |
| ProRes / ProRes RAW | Requires a supported iPhone |
:::note Availability Anyone can install CyanCamera from the App Store or Google Play, but it is currently a beta (trial period). Features and terms of availability may change. Pricing is not listed on the official page. :::
Getting started
-
Install the app: install CyanCamera from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android) (see the links in the table above).
-
Allow permissions on first launch: allow video (camera), microphone, and saving to the camera roll, and the camera screen opens (see First-Time Setup & Screen Controls).
-
Choose a camera number: under SETUP at the bottom of the screen, set Camera Number (the camera number shown on the RCP) (see Settings (SETUP)).
-
Connect to the network: connect the phone to the same network as the RCP and the configuration computer. The phone can connect in any of these ways:
- Wi-Fi
- Wired LAN: using a USB Type-C to Ethernet adapter
- LTE or other mobile networks: if the phone cannot join the RCP's network, use the cloud relay in the REMI settings under SETUP to connect over the internet (see "REMI (cloud relay) settings" in Settings (SETUP))
Once connected, REMI appears in the on-screen status display.
-
Control it from the RCP: once registered with the RCP, RCP appears in the status display, and you can control it from the RCP like any other camera (see Control from the RCP).
The app on its own (capture, recording, streaming, etc.) works without an RCP. Remote control and shading from the RCP require a Cyanview RCP.
How to use it
For first-time setup, RCP control, and streaming settings, see the CyanCamera Manual.
